3 Common Welding Techniques

Aug 08, 2022

According to Reality Works, over 30 types of welding are used worldwide. Of these types, MIG, TIG, and stick welding are three of the most common. Here's a look into these techniques that custom metal fabrication services use.

1. MIG

This technique is used in the auto industry to repair car exhaust pipes. It's also used in the construction industry for building homes and buildings by custom metal fabrication services. MIG is one of the most common welding techniques, as it's a type of arc welding that utilizes a continuous wire known as an electrode, which can be faster than other options like TIG welding. It also uses a shielding gas that moves through the gun and protects against contamination.

2. TIG

Also known as gas tungsten arc welding, TIG utilizes an electric arc in a welding process known as fusion. However, with this method, the electrode is made using tungsten, which is one of the toughest metals. Tungsten does not burn off or dissolve, making the resulting product seamless. An external gas supply like helium or argon is used, as well. This technique is used in aerospace engineering and is good for smaller-scale projects where appearances matter.

3. Stick

This welding technique is also commonly known as shielded metal arc welding. Stick welding is portable, making it a good option for those wanting to take their welding on the go. It's usually used in construction, repair, and maintenance. It's also used to repair and install underwater pipes and in industrial fabrication. In this method, a consumable and protected electrode known as the stick softens metals and combines them using heat. The major benefit of stick welding over other options is its versatility. Metal alloys like copper, nickel, aluminum, and other ferrous metals can all be welded with this method. You can also use this technique outside, as it's easier to do than those welding techniques that require shielding gas.

These are the three common types of welding used in many industries and are the ones that we use here at Craftworx. Get in touch with us if you need more information about any of the welding techniques mentioned above. Our custom metal fabrication services team would love to address any questions you may have.
